Have you ever worked hard to “get your way”? Making sure you get what you want no matter what can often come at a high cost.
When getting what we want involves pretending to be someone you’re not, or manipulating others or events, the payment comes from your internal sense of self. Too many of these payments leaves an individual feeling internally bankrupt, and without the ability to enjoy life.
What is your definition of success? Where did that definition come from? A loving parent? Or a stern taskmaster? Is the person who taught you that definition someone you would like to emulate? Consider redefining what success means to you. Does it include living with dignity, courage, joy, and self-respect no matter what happens in life?
